Black-Owned Matters

These are revolutionary days. There is no better time or way to contribute to the dismantling of the systemic racism that has worked against Black people in myriad ways, than putting your money toward progress. Black-owned businesses have suffered mightily in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with a staggering 41% shuttering since February of this year, according to a report from the National Bureau of Economic Research. This is on top of the already deeply rooted and seemingly insurmountable racial wealth gap, and the everyday discrimination and hurdles that Black-owned businesses face from banks, investors, realtors, government policy and almost every facet of our whitewashed business and consumer market. Leveling the playing field and unraveling a dark history of racism in America is not easy or fast work, but buying from Black-owned companies does immediate, measurable good by investing in Black wealth and in the creation of a stronger safety net for Black futures. We are sad to say that equal and adequate representation in the home, gift and design industries is sorely lacking – we have a long way to go. The importance of this cannot be overstated: buy, support and uplift Black power.
