Six Picks: Michele Varian

Michele Varian is a designer and shop owner based in New York. Having launched her first shop in SoHo almost 20 years ago, she recently moved both her shop and fabrication studio to Brooklyn's Atlantic Ave, where she joined a robust community of independent, owner operated design and retail businesses. She designs her own collections of textiles, lighting, wallpaper and furniture, which are made locally.

The shop is a place of discovery and also showcases the work of over 100 other designers of home products and jewelry. A few years ago, Michele started writing about her experiences as a shop and business owner, in order to try to carve a sustainable path forward for the design and retail industries. Once we are able to safely meet in large groups again, Michele looks forward to resuming hosting various events and roundtable conversations to advocate on behalf of fellow business owners.

SIX PICKS

Ring (RI-K-19), 8.6.4 - “I always like to wear one big ring that is very sculptural. This one has become my favorite. It is large enough to make a statement, but organic and soft at the same time.”

The Lorimer Lamp, Calyer Ceramics – “This one ticks all the boxes – ceramic, sculptural lighting.”

Quadrant Wall Hanging (Black), Circle & Line – “I've always loved mobiles and wall hangings and have had a selection of Circle & Line pieces as a part of our assortment for several years now. My new favorites are the all black versions. I'm ready to take a break from brass.”

Mono Face Platter, Donna Wilson – “Somehow Donna manages to walk the fine line between good quirky/weird and twee. She has recently added some ceramic pieces to her collection, this plate being one of them. Love it.”

Willow Mailable Paper Doll, Of Unusual Kind – “Anja has been a neighbor of mine in SoHo for years, and once unexpectedly gifted me one of her illustrations, which I love. When she announced that she had started a line of paper dolls, I was first in line to carry them. They are as much for adults as young folks.”

Brass Quill / Porcupine Quill Ladder, K/ller Collection – “I own this necklace personally, and could sell one every time I've worn it. It is hard to find a jewelry collection that continues to maintains its own unique, recognizable style like K/ller Collection does.”

What kinds of products/objects are you most drawn to right now?

More and more, I am bringing in one-of-a-king pieces that can't be found anywhere else. More and more, I am drawn to anything wabi-sabi and a little wonky, especially in ceramics.

Favorite Shoppe Object brand discovery?

I'm happy to find Itza Wood on Shoppe On! The quality of their wood pieces is stunning. When we unpacked our shipment from Itza Wood, I was not prepared for just how beautiful these exotic hardwood pieces are. They are fully licensed to sustainably harvest these woods, all species I had not been familiar with until Itza introduced me to them. The craftsmanship is impeccable. They are new to my shop this season, and I will definitely be purchasing more from them.

What’s the best purchase you’ve made for yourself this year?

I scored some great one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces from Lio & Linn's virtual sample sale. I've carried their jewelry and some of the their home goods for years, and I bought my wedding ring from them.

What’s your personal go-to for retail therapy?

My favorite personal shopping is right in the neighborhood where my shop now is. I love visiting other owner operated shops like mine. I'm a vintage freak, and there are both good home and clothing vintage shops in the neighborhood.

Name an item that you can’t seem to keep in stock!

SGW Lab’s tumblers and mugs have been flying off our shelves. We were fortunate that they were able to replenish our stock in time for the holiday rush. Even though we buy them in multiples, each one's glaze is different. The glazes on these tumblers and mugs are each like a unique colorful sunset. We put them all out on the shelf, so that customers can pick the ones they like best.
