Six Picks: Michael Schultz of Cursive New York

Michael Schultz is the co-owner and creative eye of Cursive New York, which operates two stores in New York City.  Cursive is a tightly focused concept with the simple mission of cultivating joy.

Michael, along with his husband, Douglas Duncan, have established Cursive to be a strong, constantly evolving voice in the industry, offering gift, stationery, home, and lifestyle products.

Cursive operated in New York City’s iconic Grand Central Terminal for 11 years and within ABC Carpet & Home for 15 years until the Covid-19 pandemic upended those long runs.  Making lemonade out of lemons, Schultz and Duncan doubled down on New York and opened 2 shops in New York’s West Village neighborhood, 4 blocks apart.  One shop is true to the original Cursive vision, while Cursive Home is the brands extension into home goods.

Schultz says: “We began our career in the Meatpacking District 25 years ago.  It’s wonderful being back, so close in the West Village.  It’s the best place in New York!”

Guess you can go home again. ☺

What is the best purchase you’ve made for yourself this year?

I love a good collab, and I love sneakers, so these black heart Converse X Comme des Garcon Chuck Taylors were made for me. Plus, I love the evil eye aspect to them.

What’s your personal go-to for retail therapy?

We recently added a puppy, Slinky, to our family so my new retail obsession is puppy toys and accessories from Zoomies here in the West Village.

Favorite Shoppe Online brand discovery?

Alice Gunther Objects. Our bookshelves at home are a veritable cabinet of curiosities, so Alice's work really got me. We gave her free reign to create two collections, one for each shop. I haven't been this excited about a new line in a long time.

“Fingerless, stitched cashmere gloves. Stay warm, look good, and ‘gram all at the same time... enough said!”

Atelier Saucier

“Reclaiming fabric that would otherwise end up in a landfill and styling it into really groovy table linens... everything about this brand is just cool.”
