Come Together
In a new period of social distance and isolation, our spirits are lifted by the Shoppe Object brands that are steadfastly working for the collective good, and to spread positivity in uncertain times. So many companies are donating proceeds to agencies in need, some are sharing knowledge by posting extensive resource pages with guidance for where we can seek and offer help, others are making inspiring things that allow us to occupy our excess time indoors in creative and productive ways. For all of them, we are grateful.
“No Kid Hungry! In December 2019, there were 62,590 homeless people, including 14,792 homeless families with 22,013 homeless children, sleeping each night in the New York City municipal shelter system. Families make up more than two-thirds of the homeless shelter population. For too many children, their only meal is at school. As schools close across the country due to COVID-19, millions of vulnerable children are losing the healthy meals they need. Here at TiA CiBANi KiDS, we believe in supporting one another in these difficult times and at all times. At this time, we will be donating 30% of every order to No Kid Hungry. Thank you for your generous support.”

“As of March 14th, the studio doors closed but the online shop is open and full of work that is in stock. I generally do not discount my work and wrote a post explaining why here. But in an attempt to keep the studio going and my amazing production team employed, I am offering a 20% discount on all work (in stock, made to order and gift cards) using code WE2020. As of 4/15/20 we have donated $3200+ (from 5% of of all online orders) to Citymeals-on-Wheels.
Also, please know that an additional 5% of sales will be donated to one of the following organizations and donation receipts will be available:
In collaboration with Seeding Sovereignty in their efforts to support Indigenous communities during this global pandemic I am offering, for pre-order, a numbered, limited edition of 100 strands of 4 Rainbow Shells & a RAFFLE (ends May 1) for a grey & white layered shell wall hanging. 100% of the proceeds from the rainbow shells and 100% of the raffle ticket price will provide water, food & PPE specifically for the Elders of the Navajo, Apache, and Pueblo communities in New Mexico. The Elders sustain the communities, ways of knowing and provide grandparent medicine.
MQuan is also participating in Together We Raise, an online auction providing COVID-19 relief & mental health to thousands of California families. Benefitting Seneca, who provide services for children and families experiencing high levels of trauma who are at risk for family disruption or institutional care for the children.
I’ve also donated to quite a few other makers who are doing good work: Polly Wales, The Safety Fund for Survivors of Domestic Violence, and Humble Matter's instagram sale benefitting The Brooklyn COVID-19 Response Fund”

“As a non-profit social enterprise, we use design thinking to create innovative solutions to tackle women’s social inequalities and reform traditional textile manufacturing practices. We employ and train women who have been forced into the commercial sex trade, survivors of domestic violence & women vulnerable to exploitation in Ajmer, India and Louisville, Kentucky. Our small team of 5 in the U.S. has recently picked up the needle to make face masks while are artisans are on lockdown in India. We also made a DIY video on how to turn your Anchal bandana into a face mask here. Within the course of 7 short days, we launched & sold over 1,000 face masks. We went from focusing on marketing and selling textiles created by our artisans in India, to now joining them in production. While our artisans in India are still on a strict lockdown, we have picked up the needle on our end to keep going. ⠀
⠀
On the first day of sales, our small but mighty team of 5 quickly realized we needed a little help. Our production team has expanded to 10+ volunteers, roommates & family members. We are so incredibly grateful for this community and to everyone who has offered their support. In addition, our hearts are with our team in India. On March 24th, India implemented a nationwide lockdown for 21 days and then extended it for another 16 days in an effort to slow down the spread of COVID-19. First and foremost, all of our artisans are currently safe and healthy.
We have been in constant communication with our partners and Project Director, discussing how we can best support these incredible women during the weeks ahead. Over the course of the lockdown, all of our salaried staff and 180 artisans will be paid their full salaries and rates. We are also committed to continuing our support to everyone if this lockdown surpasses the 37 days. Now more than ever it is apparent how much we are all interconnected and how vital it is to work together to design change in the world. Every purchase and donation you make right now enables us to continue our work to empower marginalized women and their families!”

“We started an initiative with our artisan partners in Oaxaca, Mexico to make masks using production waste and back-stock. We're doing a buy one / donate one sale online. These sold out very quickly so we're starting to work with another workshop in Chiapas, Mexico, as well. We're excited about this project because it both keeps our artisans working and employed when most other production has slowed, as well as being able to donate to organizations in need. This week we're also donating 15% of all other online sales to Border Kindness.”

“I have been gathering Resources & Information, which lives on my website: https://www.twotreestudios.com/covid19
I have been updating this almost daily as I learn more, in the hopes of keeping it as relevant and useful to folks as possible. I’ve felt a strong sense of civic & social responsibility to support other independent artists, freelancers, service workers & small business owners who, like myself, experience the brunt of an economic & healthcare collapse more forcefully than most.
Also included here are two other lists of fellow independent makers & small biz owner friends, restaurants in the NYC area who are still open and working through this crisis, and funds/organizations to donate money or time to that I think are doing really amazing work– for those who have the means to offer financial support.
On a more micro level, for the foreseeable future, I'm donating 30% of all my web sales profits to The Bail Project, and have also teamed up with chef Hannah Wong and her soon-to-be restaurant Haema to fundraise for The Restaurant Workers Community Foundation. We're currently selling sets of carved chopsticks (made by me) and XO sauce (by her) both online through my website, and in person at her takeout/delivery pop ups at Van Da, and donating 100% of the proceeds to the RWCF.”

“We’re donating 10% of sales to Chefs for America, who are feeding those in need right now in several cities across the US. I’m also working with a dear friend to make mother/child mask sets to donate to women’s shelters. We’re currently ironing out the details, and it will start in May.”

“At this unprecedented time, we're making the most of our manufacturing capacity. The Chilewich factory in Georgia is now producing not only table mats, floor mats, wall textiles, and upholstery but also personal protective gowns. These gowns are critical to mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Made of a modified version of one of our wall backings, the gowns will be provided to front-line healthcare workers in partnership with Fabric Sources International and a consortium of companies committed to addressing ongoing supply shortages. Below are images of our factory and gowns fresh off the production line. We're producing as many as 25,000 gowns per week!
Separately, Chilewich and Food52 are teaming up to help provide critical financial assistance to small, independent restaurants around the country that, due to COVID-19, have an immediate need for funds to pay set operating expenses and keep from going out of business. Through April 30, 2020, 10% of all Chilewich product sales on Food52 will be donated to non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting the workers and small business owners of the restaurant community at this time of crisis.
Through April 15, 10% of all Chilewich product sales will be donated to the James Beard Foundation Food and Beverage Industry Relief Fund. From April 16 through April 30, 10% of all Chilewich product sales will be donated to the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund.

Mungo is a family-run homeware textile company in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. “Since the outbreak we stopped all production of our homeware products and are now producing scrubs and masks from our CMT and weaving tight woven cotton which we are donating to other local NPO initiatives that are manufacturing masks. Our first mask design is woven with fine Italian linen. The double layer design is form fitting, with an optional pocket to add an additional filter. They are washable and reusable. We are in the process of adding additional design using cotton and linen, as well as prototyping masks for kids.”
